In English We Say… But in Poetry We Say…

In English we say, “I’m fine.”

But in poetry we say, “I need a hug that can work like glue and put all my broken pieces together. I might say  ‘I’m fine’, but it stands for ‘I miss feeling I’m not eroded.’”

In English we say, “I feel safe with you.”

But in poetry we say,

  • “Here is a goofy selfie of me to make you smile.

  • I’m crying my eyes out because I’m so tired of being here, I just want to escape this life and go to a quiet place, but I want you by my side.

  • I can’t fall asleep, can I call you and drift off to dreamland with your voice?

  • I have a terrible singing voice but I’d still sing for you when you feel down.”

In English we say, “I miss you.”

In poetry we say, “My heart is so heavy that only your presence can ease it.”

In English we say, “I love you.”

And although “I love you” sounds beautiful and can give a butterfly feeling.

In poetry we say, “When I think about you the world suddenly feels warmer and the colors are a bit brighter. I want to make you crappy coffee everyday for the rest of our lives and hug you with the arms that are home to you. ‘I love you’ is beautiful, but I want you to know that I will laugh at all your jokes no matter how cheesy they are. I may not say those three words as often as everyone else does, but whenever your name pops up on my screen, my butterflies flatter their wings in a beautiful harmony.”

In English we say, “I’m tired.”

But in poetry we say, “To be young, yet to carry all this worry on my shoulders. I’m looking around me and there is so much shittery going on in the world and I am merely a human and can’t fix it all. Seeing people fight and die and starve is draining me, I have no tears left in me. The injustice is so much that if I think about it a little more I’ll either collapse or shout at the top of my lungs.”

In English we say, “I’m here.”

In poetry we say, “If you could find no one to hold your hands on the days that you feel the world is on the verge of collapsing, call me and I’ll do what I can to make sure that I’ll help you to the best of my ability. And if we fail, I’ll be there to catch you and nurture you until you feel better.”
